Hi!
Does anyone have a dog, (I have a Maltese ) that bites her feet? Is there something out there that will make Sissy stop biting her paws? She does it mainly at night. And no, she doesn't have fleas. (I checked ) She has done this for YEARS. ( She's 9 years old)

Does your dog have any allergies? Is she biting until she creates a "hot spot" on her paw?

My m-i-l's maltese bites and licks her paws constantly; 12 years old now. The vet told her to put a teaspoon of Benadryl (childrens) on her food once a day to counter her allergies. Summer is always worse than winter, but she always has red paws from her chewing them. HTH

My Bichon does the same thing! Only she licks rather than bites her paws. I'm forever washing the couch cover and the cover on my bed because when she gets up there is a wet spot from where she was licking. I had the groomer grind her claws because I thought that might be the problem but she continued to lick them. I can't try the Benadryl because she only eats dry food. Hate to go back to the vet because she just had her annual check up and shots and it cost me almost $300 dollars. He charges $53 just to walk in there. She wasn't doing it so much when I was there with her so I didn't think to mention it. Anyone got any ideas that I can safely try at home?

My black lab does a lot of biting and scratching in the summer. I have been using a product called MicroTek made by EQyss. This product has worked wonders. It is in the form of a shampoo and there is also a spray. Since I've been using these products, Lucky isn't biting or scratching. You can find the product at smaller pet stores, horse supply places, and some other pet supply places or you can order it online from the EQyss Company. A little goes a long way. It's something you might want to try.

I try to answer everone at once here. NOVA36: As far as I know, she doesn't have allergies. MASTERMOM: She is ALL WHITE... . ( Well, except for her little black pads on her feet. ) MOMSKA : She doesn't get anything wet from the biting or licking. KC LADY: I'll look up Micro Tek. My very thoght when I hear of another product is " Is it safe for a 7 pound dog ? " Sissy is little. I have tried using Oatmeal shampoos( ANTI ITCH ) but they don't work on the biting and licking paws. THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU FOR REPLIES. ~ Susan

We had a Cocker Spaniel years ago that chewed on his paws. After looking for the obivous triggers, and a trip to the vet, the culprit was grass allergies. I hope your able to get a good answer from your vet.

It is so annoying to have all these wet spots everywhere and I'm sure Swiffer isn't too happy licking all the time if it is caused by an alergy etc. I was told by my vet last spring that Bichons tend to be allergic to a lot of things. At that time she was raw under her little belly from biting at an inflamation from a weed of some type. The doctor gave her a shot of something and pills for me to give her and she got very sick with uncontrolled diarrhea and even though she is white, her little face looked so pale and her eyes were sad looking. Took her back and he said he probably gave her the wrong medicine!!!!! Unbelievable. You just don't know who to trust your fur babies to.

It was a bit pricey and the shipping was over $9 but I want it quickly and don't want to have to search around right now. Next time Swiffer goes to the groomer (Patsmart) I'll check there for it but I doubt they would have it. They never seem to have anything I'm looking for.

I had a Yorkie that licked them all the time too. I thought it was a bad habit, drove me crazy. I never thought it could be allergies, I don't think it was in his case.

It was pricy..$28 but almost $9 of that was for shipping from San Diego to Boston....could it have been any further away?...lol In any event, I didn't check out PetSmart but went ahead and just ordered it the day you posted this info. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the information. Even $28 was much cheaper than a vet visit...$53 just to walk in the door and no doubt he would have given her an allergy shot and who knows what else, so it saved me a lot of money. Thanks again!

My Akita chewed his back paws and had alot of hair loss. Our vet sent us to an allergy specialist. Several thousands of dollars and scary hair loss all over his body later, we went back to our regular vet. He recommended over the counter chlortrimeton. Zack E. weighs about 125 lbs and takes 3 every night. It totally took care of the problem.

Why didn't he have you try the chlortrimeton in the first place to see if it would work before sending you to an allergy specialist? I'm sure the allergist was a doctor buddy of his (all doctors, lawyers, etc. know each other). I'm not sure I could feel warm and fuzzy about this vet in the future. However, being as I adore all animals, I'm so glad your pup is well again. I'm sure Zack E. is happy that you got him some relief. Poor things have no way of telling us how bad they are suffering with something. You are a good mommy to have gone to such lengths to find a cure.

I owned a beautiful bichon who was born with a condition called luxating patellas. In plain English she had bad knees. She didn't weigh very much (maybe 11 lbs) and from time to time she would limp when one of her legs was bothering her. After repeated and expensive visits to my vet which included blood work and X-rays, the vet came to the conclusion I should send the dog to an orthopedic surgeon vet who would basically replace the knees in both hind legs. I actually spoke to this surgeon who said it would be very rough recovering for my poor dog as well as several thousand dollars. I decided to take my dog for another opinion to a vet's practice in NY (I live in central NJ) just to get the thought of another professional out of my area. This vet was older and more "seasoned" - less gung-ho on surgery. He told me to give my bichon a glucosomine supplement every day and I would see an improvement in 6 - 8 weeks. He was absolutely right! It was like a miracle, and to think the other doctors wanted to do major surgery on my poor dog when there was another solution available. Needless to say, I don't use the first vet anymore!

The vet wanted me to take him to a specialist for allergies(imagine the cost for that ) Well...this will be a God send for me.I have spent so much money on this problem going back and forth to the vets office. What a relief to know I have found a cure. Thanks so much.I am feeling so positive about this!!!So far so good

Good luck BUBBO! I hope it helps your dog. That experience I just wrote about has left me wary about running to a specialist!

Everyone is a "Specialist" these days. Even human doctors. It's like the expression "All Chiefs and no Indians". They all want to specialize because there is more money in it. That is why we are facing a serious shortage of primary care physicians in this country. Every doctor is an "expert" in their field. Very scary.

That is why I love these forums. We can learn so much from each other. I had never heard of this product before and it stopped my dog from constantly licking her paws. Last time when she had a rash on her tummy that she was biting at the vet gave her an antibiotic that gave her diarrhea that was awful plus it didn't cure the problem. I brought her back and he said "I guess I gave her the wrong medicine". I almost fell over. I couldn't believe he made a mistake like that and even more so that he admitted it to me. However, I didn't get a break on the cost of the second visit. Too late now, but I should have spoken up and demanded no office fee be charged since it was his fault.
