You can only know whether or not you need thyroid medication by having blood tests. It' very dangerous to try to self-medicate, as the proper dose is a delicate matter, affecting your whole system. Be careful.

Hi snappygrandma, great advice!!! I was diagnose in 2002 with an underactive thyroid condition through blood test, from my family doctor. I have been on thyroid prescription medicine for this condition and have to get a blood test every 6 months to check it. So far, so good. It seems alot of ladies have this condition.

My mom had a overactive thyroid. She was always so tiny and active. She was not diagnose with it, until late in life. My older sister has the underactive thyroid, like I do. Happy they have medicine to controll this condition and all other health problems.

Good afternoon, LOTSOFDOLLS, thank you for recounting your story. I also have an underactive thyroid, and have been on supplement for at least 40 years. I had a cyst once which had to be removed, so they took half the thyroid and the isthmus. It turned out to be benign. One of our daughters had thyroid cancer 17 years ago. She has very close and thorough monitoring, but is doing fine. My mother's was overactive, before I was born, and had some external radiation, which was the way they treated things long ago. But, as I said, blood tests are the only way to be sure whether or not a person needs treatment.

Excellent advice Snappygrandma. How would anyone know whether or not they need thyroid medication without blood tests? I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism a few years ago and took the radioactive iodine pill to k/i/l/l the thyroid. Then, I was put on Levoxyl. The dose is such a fine level that I take 62.5 mcg daily. I have blood work twice a year (TSH) and more if necessary. Nobody should be self-medicating, especially for thyroid problems.

I also have dry eye (blepharitis). I noticed your post about it earlier today. My ophthalmologist gave me drops (Refresh Plus) 2x a day plus an ointment and some cortisone drops and lid scrub to control this severe case of dry eye. Then, I'm supposed to use the Refresh every day to prevent the dry eye. Sometimes I forget to use the Refresh drops and then I get such a severe case of the itchy eyes, that my eyelids peel just like a sunburn. A few months ago, I used the lid scrub because it felt good on my itchy eyes, but it just got worse and worse until my eyelids, across my nose and cheeks were all peeling and red. I put on a large pair of sunglasses and went to the Dermatologist. She told me I had eczema and to stop the scrub and use Mineral Oil on a cotton ball. Then she gave me two kinds of ointments. I was practically cured the next day. That lid scrub almost k/i/l/l/e/d me. LOL

I hope you don't have a bad case of the dry eye. If you nip it in the bud, you'll be okay. Just do as the doctor says.

Prayers are going out for your husband too. Pray Pray Pray
