I have noticed a steep decline in customer satisfaction of Gateway Computers since Acer bought Gateway. It appears that US based Customer Support for Gateway has been outsourced to another country. The reviews for Gateway Support are not the stellar reviews they once were. I have purchased 3 Gateway computers from HSN back in the day before Gateway was purchased by Acer and was 100% satisfied with the Gateway Brand and the US based Gateway Tech Support. So satisfied that other members of my family purchased Gateway computers. I need to purchase a 17" Laptop and a Desk Top for my new office; but I hesitate to purchase a Gateway because of the apparent decline in quality and customer tech support. Does Acer plan to improve their quality and customer support of their Gateway Brand anytime in the near future?

A few years ago, I made a mistake of buying a Gateway off HSN. Gateway's technical support people, repair people and management are AWFUL. I will NEVER buy another Gateway nor an Acer now since they own it. If you buy a Gateway, you better hope you do not see the day where it stops working and you have to send it in for repairs. You will get nowhere except out of money.

What brand are you buying now. My daughter switched to Dell and seems well satisfied. My other daughters tell me to consider a MAC.

I always purchased IBM computers. They are true workhorses. My desktop is 12 years old and still going strong. Can't /k/i/l/l/ an IBM!!!! After IBM sold their PC division to Lenovo, I decided to go with Toshiba. I have two Toshiba laptops and just love them. Knock on wood I haven't had one problem. When I first purchased them, I did have questions. Each time I contacted Toshiba, the customer rep was polite, helpful, and, most importantly, spoke English. Would not hesitate to purchase another Toshiba.

I currently have a Sony Vaio desktop and laptop - love them! I bought my Sony last year. The next 1 I buy will be a MAC. You don't have to worry about constantly updates to the OS and virus.

I bought a Dell desktop in 2002 and it was great! No problems. Needed to replace an ancient laptop (KDS 2001) & bought a HP Sept 2008. Dell couldn't match it in price. As Dell couldn't match price when I bought a desktop replacement Nov 2008 & a 2nd desktop in Jul 2009 (to keep the peace). HTH!

You still have to update Macs, and they do get viruses. Virus wise, the little jerks that love to write the destructive things, want to do as much damage as they can, so since most people have a PC, they write their viruses for the PC. I have had a Mac get a virus, as have a lot of people.

I bought a Gateway Dual Core laptop and didn't like it. I returned it and didn't realize it went back to Gateway in Ontario, California; all the while HSN continued to charge my card with the Flexpay. When I called HSN, they told me they have to wait until Gateway calls them with the return product and then they would refund my money. By the way, I couldn't get a customer service number from HSN because they didn't have one to give and was told it was a good place to start. I called the Gateway number and was told they couldn't help me and if I continued to stay on the phone line, they would have to start billing me!! I was told to go on line and start there. This has been a nightmare! HSN has always been very good if I returned anything in the past, but they are not giving the customer service they have in the past. I would be very careful buying any computers from HSN in the future.

I have an HP with a dual-core processor. Works great. Sorry Guss, that you have been frustrated by your Gateway experience. I always think that it is a good idea to check out different brands if possible by getting recommendations and by doing some comparisons.

I am really enjoying all these posts, although I am ripping my hair out as to what laptop to buy. I bought a Gateway laptop in 2007 when Vista came out. Got it from HSN. It's almost 3 years ols, and I am haning a hardware issue with it, plus I notice it is lagging a lot more. I am not Crazy about Gateways, but at the time I desperately needed a pc. Should have gone somewhere else to get one. I like the Sony Vaios, but don't they hav e that little 13 inch screen? My next choice would be HP. I hate Vista, and I'm glad Windows 7 is coming out, although I will wait till the laptop already has it pre-installed. So if anyone would like to offer some help, I would greatly appreciate it. I heard Dell was worse then HP. I just don't know. I thought of Mac's but way too expensive. any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks ahead of time!d'oh!

I have a Gateway desktop (2008) I bought at BB, any problems w/the actual machine I call them or Microsoft (their pretty good). Most problems were solved by "help" on site or w/my provider. I recently bought the 2 gateway lap tops (specials) that will be delivered 10/23 w/word 7 already installed. With HSN's package comes 2 years of service w/Gateway. My thoughts are (except for Apple) there all the same....just depends if you get a "lemon" or not. I would suggest go w/price you can afford, and extra tech help free (the longer the better)!

Thanks, PEACEBWU! That sounds like a good idea. I guess they are all pretty much equal for the most part. And price definitely plays a role in it. Thanks!!Winking

I am also not one crazy about Gateways. I purchased one from HSN in January of 2007 when Vista came out. It was ok for a while. I came to hate Vista. Worst OS Microsoft evr came out with. I recently got rid of my Gateway because it started to have hardware issues. Problems connecting to internet, slow, lagged a lot, etc. I had 2 pc repair guys come over only to tell me they don't know what's wrong with it. This Gateway didn't last long, not even 3 years. I don't think they are as good as they were many years back. I recently got a Sony Vaio laptop, with Windows 7, and I love it. So much better than Vista, and the Sony I feel is a lot better than the Gateway. I paid less for this wirh more bells and whistles so to speak, than I paid for that Gateway, which didn't have much of anything on it! In my opinion, I wouldn't recommend a Gateway, and the salesman at Best Buy really didn't have to much good to say about them either. They only had a few Gateways for sale, not much of a selection at all. I guess they are not big sellers anymore according to several salesmen there.

I bought my Gateway laptop from HSN in 2005, and I had a tech support issue with it. Getting the correct tech support number was a pain, and it was way before they started announcing on the air that there was a special number just for HSN Gateway users. Knock wood, it is still going strong. The next computer I buy will be a Dell or perhaps a Mac.

so far no problems with my gateway. i've had mostly gateway's, 5 out of 6. my compaq was good also. i agree most are the same..depends on whether a lemon!! i got the last 15.4" because of the 2 yr warrantee. my husband is extremely pc challenged and he is using the laptop the most and he liks it. My goal is to get a new, faster one next yr when he is so dependant on this one, that he tells me to but another!!

I would like one with a longer battery life. Other than that, we like our GATEWAY.
