I really dread doing a lot of research and leg work, but I guess I must. It doesn't need to be huge. Is it safe to just go to Walmart and pick one? Which brands would you recommend? Samsung? Sony? Help would be appreciated.

Pick a brand name, I have a Sony 52 inch and got insurance for it too for a tv this size its a good idea! Get what you really want and need so you don't have regrets, and remember black friday is soon good sales then, and check sunday paper too, I researched for a long time before I bought mine it was between the one I bought and a Sharp. Best investment I ever made!Good luck!

I went to Walmart and got a Sanyo hi def tv (27 inch because I don't have a huge living room and a really big screen tv would not do). I got it with added warranty protection for a really great price. It is a dream tv, and it came with more outputs than a Vzio, which was higher priced. For my money, I wanted to buy a tv in person because I read the reviews of Westinghouse and LG tv's and most people weren't that happy-and if there is a problem with the tv and you have to ship it back, that's a pain. Do your homeowrk, ask questions, and get a brand that you know and trust.

I have a Sony Bravia 40" HDTV, 1080P. I love it. Sony is an excellent brand for tv's. Don't get some off brand or a name you really aren't familiar with. Good luck!

Hi Smilie ~ I was like you - didn't feel like doing alot of research. Lightning fried my tv so i needed a new one right away. I went to BestBuy and bought a 32" Samsung flat screen. (it's for the bedroom) The people looked squashed in the widescreen format. So i decided that a bigger tv might have more height so the people would look at little more normal. LOL So i returned the 32" and bought a 40". I liked the Samsung and all its features. By now i was getting used to the Samsung tv and the remote. But the 40" just seemed too big for my bedroom. My tv that fried had picture in picture and i really missed that feature. The guys who worked at BestBuy told me that no one makes pic in pic anymore - except the $2500 and up tv's. Then i started doing some research - finally. LOL I found out that the Samsung tv's DO have pic in pic. I returned the 40" and bought the 37" and I LOVE IT! For an additional $80 you get an extended 3 or 4 year warranty. HSN sells the Samsung tv's and some of them with free shipping. And flex pays. I'm picky and i really love this tv. The 37" was perfect for me. And it's a breeze to set up too. (And btw - BestBuy was wonderful to deal with on the returns.) And no, i don't work for Samsung - LOL

We just bought a new 52" Samsung and it is amazing! I DID do a lot of research and a lot of pricing and got the best price by far at ..... Sear's. They beat Best Buy, Walmart and BJ's by over $300 plus we got a Blue Ray thrown in and an extra 10% off for opening a charge account. We almost didn't go to Sears but my husband said 'why not?' and so we found this unbelievable deal. Sears is coming way up in the electronics department; check them out before you buy.

Samsung manufactures the tvs for Sony. (little bit of interesting info).
I have a 40" Samsung in the living room and a 32" LG in the bedroom. I am very pleased with both. I also have a Magnavox 26" HDTV that I bought when they first came out. (It came out right before they started using HDMI, so I have to connect it with a HDMI to DVI cable).
You need to buy a tv that suits YOUR particular needs. That will determine the features you need and what different kinds of connections you will need.
Warning: There are a lot of HDTVs that are really cheap right now since the manufacturers are trying to get rid of their stock of less than 1080p sets. You will find lots of 36" or smaller tvs on sale that are 780p. Although these sets are technically still HDTVs, the picture quality is not as good as a 1080i or 1080p.
