Hi!

Does anyone have a dog, (I have a Maltese ) that bites her feet? Is there something out there that will make Sissy stop biting her paws? She does it mainly at night. And no, she doesn't have fleas. (I checked ) She has done this for YEARS. ( She's 9 years old)

My m-i-l's maltese bites and licks her paws constantly; 12 years old now. The vet told her to put a teaspoon of Benadryl (childrens) on her food once a day to counter her allergies. Summer is always worse than winter, but she always has red paws from her chewing them. HTH

My black lab does a lot of biting and scratching in the summer. I have been using a product called MicroTek made by EQyss. This product has worked wonders. It is in the form of a shampoo and there is also a spray. Since I've been using these products, Lucky isn't biting or scratching. You can find the product at smaller pet stores, horse supply places, and some other pet supply places or you can order it online from the EQyss Company. A little goes a long way. It's something you might want to try.

We had a Cocker Spaniel years ago that chewed on his paws. After looking for the obivous triggers, and a trip to the vet, the culprit was grass allergies. I hope your able to get a good answer from your vet.

Thanks so much! I just went on-line and ordered the spray. It was a bit pricey and the shipping was over $9 but I want it quickly and don't want to have to search around right now. Next time Swiffer goes to the groomer (Patsmart) I'll check there for it but I doubt they would have it. They never seem to have anything I'm looking for.

I had a Yorkie that licked them all the time too. I thought it was a bad habit, drove me crazy. I never thought it could be allergies, I don't think it was in his case.

My Akita chewed his back paws and had alot of hair loss. Our vet sent us to an allergy specialist. Several thousands of dollars and scary hair loss all over his body later, we went back to our regular vet. He recommended over the counter chlortrimeton. Zack E. weighs about 125 lbs and takes 3 every night. It totally took care of the problem.

MOMSKA you make a great point! I owned a beautiful bichon who was born with a condition called luxating patellas. In plain English she had bad knees. She didn't weigh very much (maybe 11 lbs) and from time to time she would limp when one of her legs was bothering her. After repeated and expensive visits to my vet which included blood work and X-rays, the vet came to the conclusion I should send the dog to an orthopedic surgeon vet who would basically replace the knees in both hind legs. I actually spoke to this surgeon who said it would be very rough recovering for my poor dog as well as several thousand dollars. I decided to take my dog for another opinion to a vet's practice in NY (I live in central NJ) just to get the thought of another professional out of my area. This vet was older and more "seasoned" - less gung-ho on surgery. He told me to give my bichon a glucosomine supplement every day and I would see an improvement in 6 - 8 weeks. He was absolutely right! It was like a miracle, and to think the other doctors wanted to do major surgery on my poor dog when there was another solution available. Needless to say, I don't use the first vet anymore!

Worked for me also BUBBO. That is why I love these forums. We can learn so much from each other. I had never heard of this product before and it stopped my dog from constantly licking her paws. Last time when she had a rash on her tummy that she was biting at the vet gave her an antibiotic that gave her diarrhea that was awful plus it didn't cure the problem. I brought her back and he said "I guess I gave her the wrong medicine". I almost fell over. I couldn't believe he made a mistake like that and even more so that he admitted it to me. However, I didn't get a break on the cost of the second visit. Too late now, but I should have spoken up and demanded no office fee be charged since it was his fault.
